We just visited a small restaurant, specialized in roasted chicken – Ciknic Roast Chicken, at Dharmawangsa Jakarta. The restarurant is located opposite Dharmawangsa Square, beside Alpha Mart.

Ciknic - Roast Chicken

1. Place

From the outside, it looks small and unassuming but quite homey.

The interior of the restaurant is even better.

It has sets of minimalist-design furniture and a few art deco dominated with the colors of maroon & muted teal.

They only have three tables in total, each with four seats.

We came at around 2:30pm, and it was deserted.

When we were about to leave the restaurant, though, all tables were fully occupied.

2. Food

Ciknic is one of a few restaurants that has a very straightforward selection of menu.

Ciknic basically only offers roasted chicken (quarter or whole) with condiments and side dishes.

We ordered two servings of classic quarter chicken set, which includes a quarter of chicken (breast or thigh), sauteed baby potato, mixed green salad with lemon sauce.

It costs IDR 48,000 per serving, which is a quite reasonable price.

To add sauce, we need to pay an extra of IDR 12,000. And so we, decided to order gravy sauce and white mushroom sauce. We also ordered side dishes – Creamy Spinach and Sauteed Baby Potato

(because they run out of Herb Fries).

To top it off, we ordered Spicy Garlic Spaghetti with Roast Chicken (IDR 58,000). We thought a quarter chicken wouldn’t be enough to satiate our hunger.

For drinks, we opted for soda (Cola & Ginger Ale) which we think would suit our meals.

1. Roast Chicken

All of our orders took no more than 10 minutes to be served.

The chicken was cooked beautifully until it was caramel-brown.

It was so tender (since we ordered thigh part), and the spices / herbs were really distinct even to the deepest crevices of the meat.

The sauteed baby potato was perfect – it was still solid and not mushy at all. All the greens were very fresh, and even more so when eaten with the lemon vinaigrette.

Both sauces (Gravy & White Mushroom) were equally good, but not so unique.

We didn’t dip the chicken in them all that much, because without the sauce, the chicken was already wonderful.

2. Side dishes of roast chicken

The side dishes were equally nice.

We didn’t often see creamy spinach in the menu – so we ordered right away out of curiosity.

It has a dominant fried garlicky flavour combined with creamy sauce you often find in Carbonara pasta.

The spinach was still intact, and its flavour stands out amidst the strong Carbonara flavour.

Meanwhile, the Sauteed Baby Potato was served in such a big portion, despite the low price (IDR 18,000).

3. Spicy Garlic Spaghetti

Lastly, we had our Spicy Garlic Spaghetti with Roast Chicken.

This time we picked the breast part, which was quite dry as expected.

However, it didn’t lose its consistency in terms of flavour.

Although the chicken breast was dry, it was not tough to eat.

The spaghetti was very simple, just like the ones you make at home.

However, we like that it has a very strong chili and garlic taste.

A little note here, when we finished eating the chicken to the bone, we saw that the bone was actually quite reddish.

It means that the chicken was frozen and thawed, before prepared for serving. We didn’t mind though, because the taste is great.

[Overall Review]

The whole meal cost us IDR 278,000.

Since there is a Mastercard promo until June 2022 (20% discount for Mastercard bearer), we only paid IDR 218,000. We think that this a very fair price, given the taste, quality, and the whole joyful experience that we had.

The restaurant is also located in one of the most expensive neighborhood in Jakarta, so this was unexpected (in a good way)!

An adult man with a big appetite may think that the chicken serving is way too little.

Today we ordered a portion for 3 people, and with such price, we still think that this is one of the best deal that you can get in “uptown” Jakarta.
