On this occasion, we would like to share our experience visiting a small diner in Dongdaemun, Seoul, South Korea.

The place is called “Ssada Kimbap” which tells you that their main dish is Kimbap (Korean rice roll, quite similar to Maki – a type of Japanese Sushi made of rice and filling wrapped in seaweed) and is similar to "Kimbab Chunkuk(김밥천국)" - nowadays, hard to find this place.

Upon entering, we were obliged to show our vaccination certification with COOV(korea vaccination certification like "PeduliLindungi")

And, we were also obliged to register our visit by safe call to to track our movement in case there is a virus breakout or new Corona cluster.

How foreign tourists use COOV application?

--> Foreign tourist(for short term traveling) is not possible to use COOV.

     Have to go to the nearest publih health center(보건소) or vaccination Ceter(예방접종센터)

     and then ask "Hard-copy of vaccination certifiaction" if you get vaccination abroad.

Calling number to track our movement

First, we saw other people's table to see their meals. We ordered two main dishes; Tuna kimbab we wanted to eat, Donkasseu customers in two tables ordered and payment is expected upfront.

It didn’t cost much, however the cost is definitely getting higher along with the development of Dongdaemun as Korean most hype area for clothes shopping. While waiting for our food to come, we are free to take side dishes. We took a little bit of Kimchi and Pickled Radish, some bland soup, as well as a bottle of Iced Corn Tea.

 

 

1. Tuna Kimbab(참치김밥)

Our first dish, is Tuna Kimbap.

The serving is quite big & fulfilling for one adult (men and women alike). As you can see in the picture below, food presentation is very colorful - a combination of black, white, yellow, orange, pink, green, coral, jade, and brown! We love Kimbap because it has a rich flavor and texture. It is sweet, savory, sour, and fresh at the same time. It is soft, chewy, mushy, and crunchy at the same time. However, Tuna Kimbap in this place has no distinction compare to any other Kimbap that we had tried before.

 

2. Cheese Donkasseu(치즈돈가스)

Our second and final dish is Donkasseu, which is a breaded pork cutlet with mozzarella cheese inside.

The dish comes with some sauce (tastes similar to barbeque sauce), purple cabbage salad, and three spoonful of rice on the side.

The portion is large, and due to the cheese & fried bread crumbs coating, this dish is very fulfilling. In Ssada Kimbap, the Donkasseu tends to be on the sweeter side. There is definitely more delicious Donkasseu out there.

In general, we did enjoy our meals. Eating simple food in a simple diner is definitely life’s simple gift.
